Community members of Northridge apartments may love the constant, comforting companionship they receive from their furry friends, but not the odors they leave behind. An apartment that smells like wet dog or a litter box is no fun for anyone. However, there are numerous ways to rid your home of pet odors so you can enjoy your canine and/or feline roommates without worry.

IDENTIFY THE STINK

You must find the source of the odor to eliminate it. Did Fido accidentally tarnish the rug or does Fluffy’s litter box need some extra deodorizing? When your nose smells odors, but your eyes don’t see it, use a black light to discover old and new sources that might be causing a stink. If the smell is more indistinct, it could be your pet, who rolled around in something unpleasant outdoors. A deodorizing bath and/or vigorous brushing should take care of the smell.

VACUUM TWICE

Carpeting can hide odors deep down, especially when fur and/or dander gets trapped within the fabric. Even when you clean consistently, hair and dander still get embedded in your carpet fibers. Vacuum thoroughly, then sprinkle carpet and upholstered furniture with baking soda or a product specifically made for neutralizing pet odors. Leave treatment for a couple hours, then vacuum every crevice again. Use hose attachments on your curtains and/or drapes to remove odors there.

ODOR CONTROL PRODUCTS

Never try to mask odors with fragrances, which is only a temporary solution because the odor will return. Instead, choose products that control and/or neutralize odors. Many over-the-counter products are specifically made for pet odors. However, check the labels to ensure it’s nontoxic to animals. Sprinkle baking soda in your litter box to help eliminate odors there and try commercial enzyme products for stubborn odors throughout your apartment. Sunlight and fresh air is also a natural way to help remove odors, so throw those windows open.
