Apartment Living""

Are you getting ready to do a little spring cleaning in your Northridge apartment? Before you stock up on the commercial cleaners, take a closer look at the ingredients. You may want to try your hand at making your own. You’ll save money and do a bit to protect the indoor environment in your apartment home if you do. Here are four easy recipes to consider.

1. GLASS CLEANER

To make glass cleaner, mix ½ cup of white or apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol with a 70 percent concentration and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. You can add a couple of drops of orange essential oil to make it smell nice. To use, spray on a towel or cloth first, then on the glass, and wipe.

2. SOFT SCRUB

From cleaning the shower to cleaning the kitchen counters, soft scrub is great to have on hand. Make your own by mixing 1 & 1/2 cups baking soda, 1/2 cup natural laundry soap and 10 drops of lavender, lemon or tea tree essential oil. Mix well until it forms a paste, and use to scrub your hard surfaces.

3. OVEN CLEANER

Cleaning the oven or stove with toxins means the potential to contaminate your food and your indoor air when you cook. Keep your Northridge, California, apartment safe with homemade oven cleaner. Mix 2 cups of hot water, 1 tablespoon natural dish soap and 1 teaspoon of borax in a spray bottle. Spray on the mess, and allow it to soak for 20 minutes. It should easily wipe clean.

4. ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER

For something stronger than vinegar and water, gather 2 teaspoons borax, 1 teaspoon washing soda, 2 cups hot water, 4 tablespoons vinegar, ½ teaspoon natural dish soap and ¼ teaspoon tea tree oil with 8 drops each of rosemary oil, tangerine oil and lavender oil. Dissolve the borax and washing soda in the water, strain into a spray bottle and add the remaining ingredients. Add a bit more of hot water and test on the surface you will be cleaning.
