\nAs you’re probably aware, your furry friend can really test a sofa’s upholstery with their sharp claws, dirty paws, hair, and sometimes even, drool. That’s why you need to consider carefully the type of fabric you choose when purchasing a new sofa. Here are two upholstery choices that work well with pets and two that aren’t ideal choices if you have furry friends living in your home.<\/p>\n

LEATHER = EXCELLENT
\nThe best upholstery choice for a sofa, by far, is distressed leather. It is durable and easy to clean. Muddy paw marks and drool, for instance, are easily wiped away. In addition, light scratch marks from a pet’s claws can also be mostly buffed out and will also blend in with the distressed look of the leather. Another reason to choose leather? Pet fur won’t stick to leather like it will on other types of fabrics.<\/p>\n

MICROFIBER = GOOD
\nLike leather, this synthetic fabric is easy to clean and is also very durable. A big plus? A cat’s claws are less likely to fray this fabric’s fine synthetic fibers. And while pet hair can collect on microfiber, it is typically easy to remove with a lint roller or with vacuuming.<\/p>\n

TWEED = BAD
\nBecause this fabric has a loose weave, it can be susceptible to being snagged by cat and dog claws. In addition, dirt and pet hairs can get caught deep down in the weave, which could eventually cause your sofa to develop that dreaded “doggy” odor. Even worse, tweed attracts pet hair like crazy.<\/p>\n

CHENILLE = BAD
\nAlthough chenille is soft and durable, it is not the best fabric for a sofa if you have pets in your home. Chenille has a nubby pile that is made up of little loops. And — as any cat owner knows — little loops don’t do well against sharp cat claws.<\/p>\n
