A visually appealing and well-placed area rug can set off a room. But, finding that perfect area rug can be easier said than done. Here are some tricks for selecting an area rug that we hope prove useful for our Candlewood North community members in Northridge, California.

SIZE MATTERS
The width of an area rug can have a significant impact on a room’s visual appeal. If the rug seems too small, that can make the room feel less inviting. If the rug takes up too much floor space, that can make the room feel smaller. It’s important to map out the right size for your space. Try laying out paper or tape to the desired size and then take measurements. With that data in hand, you won’t waste time looking at the wrong sized rugs and making unnecessary store exchanges.

MEASURE A ROOM BY ITS PARTS
One of the tricks to purchasing the right size rug is to not, necessarily, base the size off the room. Sometimes the best approach is to work with the furniture configuration instead. The amount of space outside the area rug may be less important than how well it works with seating.

For instance, laying an area rug under an intimate sofa, chairs and coffee table can create an inviting space that family and guests naturally gravitate toward. That can spark improved social interaction. When thinking along these lines, consider laying an area rug just under the dining room set or only the bed. The space outside of the area rug may enhance a large or cozy room feel. However, making the space feel homey should be job one.

CONSIDER STANDARD SIZES
When mapping out the desired rug size, it may prove helpful to think in terms of standard rug sizes. Although store inventory can vary by a few inches, working within the framework of these common sizes will allow you greater color and design options. Try mapping out the floor space with these foot-sizes in mind.

3 x 5
4 x 6
5 x 8
7 x 10
8 x 11
9 x 12
Many manufacturers have discontinued the 6 x 9 area rug as a standard size. However, you may still run across the size at outlets.

COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES
When it comes to expressing your individual taste, color outside the lines. Non-standard area rugs, brilliant or deep colors and interior designs that blaze their own trail are just as important as common wisdom. At the end of the day, select an area rug that makes your living space yours.
