Tips on How to Avoid Sunburns

Sunburns are painful. Luckily, there are things you can do to help reduce your chances of getting a sunburn.

Some things you can do to avoid sunburns include:

  • Use a sunscreen that has a minimum of 30 SPF
  • Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes
  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before heading outside
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Reduce your exposure to the sun by trying to do activities either earlier or later in the day
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that covers exposed skin
  • Purchase clothing that is made out of sun protective fabric

Easy Home Remedies Used to Treat Sunburns

Sometimes no matter how much sunscreen you put on or how many precautions you take, you end up with a sunburn. When this happens there are things you can do to treat the sunburn.

Home treatment options for sunburns include:

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Use a damp towel, cold shower or cold bath to cool the skin
  • Apply aloe vera lotion or gel to keep the sunburn moisturized
  • Wear additional layers to protect the area that is sunburned

Ribs on Grill

5 Barbecue Recipes for Memorial Day

Ribs on GrillMemorial Day may be a day of remembrance, but it’s also the start of summer, and therefore, ideal for backyard barbecues. Looking for something new and interesting to impress your guests? Give one of these fun recipes a try at our community’s BBQ grilling area:

Chicken Breasts

Simple and traditional, this is a great option for beginning BBQ fanatics. Pour your favorite barbecue sauce in a dish and coat both sides of each skinless chicken breast. Grill for five minutes on each side and brush on extra sauce if needed.

Grilled Tofu

Use extra firm tofu for this vegetarian recipe. Marinate in barbecue sauce for 45 minutes prior to grilling. Use bamboo skewers while grilling, preferably six minutes per side.

Grilled Shrimp

If you’re a seafood nut, you’ll love this grilled shrimp recipe. Use a pound of uncooked medium-size shrimp, ideally peeled and with the tails still on. Brush with barbecue sauce and thread seven or eight shrimps onto each skewer. You’ll only need to grill for two or three minutes per side, so this is a nice option if you’re short on time.

Ribs

There’s nothing like delicious, messy ribs to get your summer started off on the right foot. These ribs add a bit of spice to your typical barbecue sauce. Combine a tablespoon of paprika and a tablespoon of chili powder with a cup of barbecue sauce, and place the mix in a jar. Brush the mix on pre-cooked ribs. Heat the grill to 250 degrees. Place the ribs on the grill, cover, and cook for twenty minutes. Brush with more sauce, flip, and cook for another ten minutes. Repeat the process until the ribs have been on the grill for an hour.

Bacon Chicken in the Slow Cooker

Can’t make it to the grill? Use your crock pot instead. Cook chicken breasts on high for three hours, drain the juice, and pour on chopped cooked bacon and your preferred barbecue sauce. Cook for another hour on low.

Try one or more of the recipes outlined above — your Northridge apartment will quickly be deemed the BBQ hot spot. Candlewood North has a BBQ grilling area perfect for Memorial Day and other occasions. To learn more about our amenities, contact us today.

A Pot With Succulents

4 Easy DIY Mother’s Day Gifts

A Pot With SucculentsWith Mother’s Day coming up on May 14, you’re slowly running out of time to come up with the perfect gift if you haven’t gotten one already. Fortunately, these DIY projects are easy enough to do in a day so you still have a chance to put your own personal touch on a gift. If you feel like being crafty, try one of these four suggestions.

Make a Different Bouquet

Flowers are beautiful, and they smell amazing. However, they inevitably wilt and die, and it can even be painful for mom to throw them out. Instead, try planting a mini garden full of succulents that will last much longer (without a lot of maintenance). A layer of gravel, a layer of soil, and an artfully arranged bouquet at the top will complete the project.

Homemade Cookie Butter

If your mom has a favorite type of cookie, you can do more than just drop off a package or a basket of them. Get a little more creative by making your own cookie butter. Whether it’s peanut butter, cream-filled, or chocolate chip, make cookie butter that will be truly delicious!

Make Accessories Brighter

Everyday items like wooden hair brushes, kitchen utensils, or even tools don’t have to look so everyday when you brighten them up. Use the right shellac, some tape, and your mom’s favorite colors to give them a cheerful appearance. Purchase a few on your own, or try to get your mom’s utensils when she’s not looking.

Create a Flip Book

A flip book that lists the reasons why you love your mom is an easy thing for her to pick up if she happens to be feeling down. The key is to really think about what you want to say to your mom and to use cardstock that matters to her. For example, you can have a map of her favorite place on the back of the card.

Celebrating mother’s day in our Northridge apartments will be even more special if you make your own gifts. If you’re looking for a new apartment this spring, consider a move to Candlewood North for a new living experience. Give us a call today to schedule a tour!

Two Tacos

Where to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Two TacosWhen you’re in the LA area, the last thing you need to do is worry that there won’t be any good Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The only real problem is choosing where to go, and figuring out how far you want to drive. Keep these ideas on your short list, and you won’t go wrong.

Highland Block Party

Although this bar is a bit of a drive, at this spot in Highland Park you’ll find a major fiesta going on complete with free tacos. It should go without saying that free food will attract a major crowd, but it’s all part of the fun. They’ll also have Mexican craft beer, a mariachi band, and mini churros. Try the margarita slushies and relax after a busy work week.

Salsa and Beer

If you’re looking for something a little closer to home, this bar in Van Nuys will definitely hit the spot. This restaurant may be simple in terms of decor, but the food and the drinks certainly aren’t. This neighborhood favorite gets much of its charm from its loyal fan base and awesome bartenders, so give it a shot if you’re looking to skip the drive.

Petty Cash Taqueria

If you want to get your day started off right in LA, for this celebration the restaurant’s doors open at 11 a.m. and don’t close until 1 a.m. the next day. While you’ll need a reservation if you go before 5 p.m., feel free to stop on by anytime after that. The party will feature drink specials and a DJ, but you’ll likely have the most fun if you spend time with another special guest: the balloon artist.

Los Toros

This restaurant in Chatsworth has so many different sections, and all of them will be ready to party. The restaurant has been serving big portions and big drinks with big hearts for 50 years! They’re having an anniversary this year on Cinco de Mayo that promises to be epic. Come support this local business all day long.

Our apartments in Northridge will never disappoint when it comes to finding fun things to do any time of year. If you want to find out more about Candlewood North and its many amenities, call today to talk to our friendly staff and schedule a good time to drop by.

Multiple Wine Glasses

4 Spring DIY Ideas You Can Do Over the Weekend

Multiple Wine GlassesEven the most creative and handy of people may claim they don’t have the time after their regular 9 to 5 to tackle any major DIY projects. However, there are plenty of things you can do that won’t take you any longer than a weekend. They’re easy enough to leave you feeling energized and motivated afterward, yet still challenging enough to bring a deep sense of satisfaction when you admire the final results.

Spool Centerpieces

Inexpensive and festive, you can take spools of different sizes, put flowers in the middle, and then place them on your coffee or dining room table. Arrange the spools closely together as a bouquet, or create a circle around a candle. Choose your favorite flowers whether they’re fresh or artificial, and have fun with the design. Should you choose to use fresh flowers, you can buy floral foam which can be wet with a straw so the blooms last longer.

Coasters

Coasters really do protect tables, but they tend to get lost, misplaced or worn out fairly often. Coasters should fit with the decor as well as serve a practical function, so use these ideas to make your own or as gifts for friends.

Mod Podge Wine Glasses

Glitter makes your glasses more festive, no matter the season. Mod podge is easy to apply, comes in a variety of spring colors and can be used on any kind of stemware. Choose your favorite spring pastels and drink in style with the breeze in your hair.

Brighten Up Your Door

The door is one of the most important parts of your home for both guests and residents, so give it a fresh look and watch it come alive. You can do this by using stick-on murals in our apartments in Northridge to give your abode a very distinctive opening feature.

Don’t let another weekend go by without trying one of these fun projects! Even without a lot of artistic talent, you can definitely make these happen. If you’re looking for a bigger place to craft, consider making Candlewood North your new home. Give us a call to find out more about our amenities and available floor plans!

Small Dog on Couch

How to Get Rid of Pet Odors in Your Apartment

Small Dog on CouchCommunity members of Northridge apartments may love the constant, comforting companionship they receive from their furry friends, but not the odors they leave behind. An apartment that smells like wet dog or a litter box is no fun for anyone. However, there are numerous ways to rid your home of pet odors so you can enjoy your canine and/or feline roommates without worry.

Identify the Stink

You must find the source of the odor to eliminate it. Did Fido accidentally tarnish the rug or does Fluffy’s litter box need some extra deodorizing? When your nose smells odors, but your eyes don’t see it, use a black light to discover old and new sources that might be causing a stink. If the smell is more indistinct, it could be your pet, who rolled around in something unpleasant outdoors. A deodorizing bath and/or vigorous brushing should take care of the smell.

Vacuum Twice

Carpeting can hide odors deep down, especially when fur and/or dander gets trapped within the fabric. Even when you clean consistently, hair and dander still get embedded in your carpet fibers. Vacuum thoroughly, then sprinkle carpet and upholstered furniture with baking soda or a product specifically made for neutralizing pet odors. Leave treatment for a couple hours, then vacuum every crevice again. Use hose attachments on your curtains and/or drapes to remove odors there.

Odor Control Products

Never try to mask odors with fragrances, which is only a temporary solution because the odor will return. Instead, choose products that control and/or neutralize odors. Many over-the-counter products are specifically made for pet odors. However, check the labels to ensure it’s nontoxic to animals. Sprinkle baking soda in your litter box to help eliminate odors there and try commercial enzyme products for stubborn odors throughout your apartment. Sunlight and fresh air is also a natural way to help remove odors, so throw those windows open.

Candlewood North in Northridge is an ideal choice for California apartment residents with pets. We welcome up to two pets per apartment home so you can bring your cat(s) and/or dog(s) up to 25 pounds to your new home. Pasta Salad on Plate

3 Delicious Spring Recipes to Try

Pasta Salad on PlateAll the colors of spring hopefully inspire you to make your dinner plate match the outside of the apartments in Northridge. Without some serious variety on your plate, you may find yourself failing to get all the nutrients you need. Even worse, you may find that your meals are boring. This is a time to awaken your body up with energy and life, and the right food is a big part of that. Use these spring recipes to mix it up.

Steak and Spring Vegetables

Eating with the seasons is a great way to keep all of your meals as fresh as possible. This one-skillet meal is chock-full of greenery like peas and asparagus, and has a spicy zing with a flavorful mustard that pulls the whole meal together. This dish is particularly good for when you’ve had a tough day at work and don’t have a lot of mental energy to put together a more complicated dinner.

Spring Pasta Salad

Entertaining doesn’t have to be difficult when you have easy meals that can please practically any taste. When the temperatures heat up, cool the palate down with this healthy and colorful pasta salad that is packed with vibrant veggies and fabulous flavor. Take it as an appetizing starter to any outdoor picnic and watch as the tender pasta, juicy tomatoes and rich ricotta are devoured in minutes.

Rhubarb Crisp

Instead of serving another piece of peach pie this year, try rhubarb crisp as a tribute to the in-season fruit. There’s no reason to deny yourself this year, especially considering that this dessert is heavily dependent on rhubarb packed with vitamins C and K, along with fiber, protein and calcium. The walnuts, oats and brown sugar bring this delicious dessert together and serve as an interesting and tasty departure to the everyday chocolate cakes or sugar cookies.

Northridge apartments may not have the frigid temperatures of the Midwest or the Northern states, but that’s no reason to let spring come and go without a special treat. There’s still a lot of greenery to celebrate. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, consider a tour around the grounds of Candlewood North. Give us a call today to come see what we’re all about!

Yosemite Valley

3 Spring Break Ideas

Yosemite ValleyLiving in Northridge puts you close enough to LA to have an excellent spring break even if you don’t go anywhere. However, you’re also close to a variety of other hot spots that would love to welcome you for the week off, so consider the following 3 options for a quick getaway.

Yosemite

Shake off the winter blues and start getting your summer body in shape. Yosemite is one of the most beautiful national parks in the country and a challenge for those who love being outdoors. But this national treasure can accommodate people of all fitness levels too. There are a number of spots where you can still see the views without having to test your stamina to its outer-most boundaries. Go here to get in a few hikes, see the waterfalls, and explore the peaks that make this area so beloved.

Las Vegas

For a more traditional spring break, you’ll have an excellent time if you’re looking for a wild and rowdy city. The major hotels on the strip will be full of young people who only want to forget about their traditional lives for a few days. Expect a lot of noise, a lot of new memories and a lot of fun. Vegas around this time of year is definitely not going to be for those who love to relax, but it’s perfect for those who want to blow off some steam before they have to go back to work.

Santa Barbara

If you’re one of those people who cringes at the idea of Vegas, then consider Santa Barbara for the opposite experience. By far the closest of these suggestions, you’ll still get a tan without feeling like you’re going to be carried off in a crowd of partiers at any moment. Known for its wineries, shopping and incredibly clean beaches, it’s excellent if you’re looking to regroup and recharge from a hectic winter.

No matter what you’re planning to do this year, our Northridge apartments give you the excitement you’re looking for on your own doorstep. If you want to know more about how Candlewood North helps our community live their lives to the fullest, call us today to learn more about our facilities, floor plans and central location.

Shamrock

4 Tasty Recipes for St. Patrick’s Day

ShamrockCelebrating St. Patrick’s Day can be done by going to a parade, wearing green or ordering a Guinness instead of your usual Budweiser. But it can also be honored by making traditional Irish recipes before enjoying the food amongst friends in your apartment. Whether you love to cook or not, exploring a culture’s heritage through its dishes can teach you a lot, so consider the following 4 recipes to make your Shamrock Day more memorable.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Convenient for those who work a traditional 9 to 5, this recipe is made in the slow cooker. Just put the ingredients in, and the juicy, tender corned beef will be waiting for you as soon as you walk through the door. Pair it with herb buttered potatoes for an even heartier meal.

Shepherd’s Pie

Probably the most well known of all the dishes from the Emerald Isle, it’s also one of the most delicious. You can make the pie with buffalo, ground beef or steak. You can even substitute vegetables like turnips and carrots for a healthier take on this old favorite. There’s nothing better than seeing the crusted mashed potatoes at the top of the dish before digging into the many layers below.

Scones

Pre-make these scones the day before and then enjoy them with your morning coffee. You can also use fruit to make these scones sweet or cheddar cheese to make them savory. Savory scones are an excellent side dish to shepherd’s pie or corned beef. Either way, these light and fluffy treats are worth the time in the kitchen.

Guinness Float

For a whole new take on the traditional dark beer, try this float. It’s definitely made for both the kid and the adult in you. While it may seem complicated, it just takes Bailey’s Irish cream, whiskey-spiked ice cream, and a little bit of Guinness to make this delicious dessert.

Those who host small gatherings in Northridge apartments during St. Patrick’s Day will have a chance to show off their cooking chops while honoring this special holiday. If you want a better space for your next party, consider touring Candlewood North to learn more about how our facilities and floor plans can make your next party even more special.
