Spray Bottle

4 DIY Natural Cleaners for Your Spring Cleaning Jobs

Spray BottleAre you getting ready to do a little spring cleaning in your Northridge apartment? Before you stock up on the commercial cleaners, take a closer look at the ingredients. You may want to try your hand at making your own. You’ll save money and do a bit to protect the indoor environment in your apartment home if you do. Here are four easy recipes to consider.

1. Glass Cleaner

To make glass cleaner, mix ½ cup of white or apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol with a 70 percent concentration and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. You can add a couple of drops of orange essential oil to make it smell nice. To use, spray on a towel or cloth first, then on the glass, and wipe.

2. Soft Scrub

From cleaning the shower to cleaning the kitchen counters, soft scrub is great to have on hand. Make your own by mixing 1 & 1/2 cups baking soda, 1/2 cup natural laundry soap and 10 drops of lavender, lemon or tea tree essential oil. Mix well until it forms a paste, and use to scrub your hard surfaces.

3. Oven Cleaner

Cleaning the oven or stove with toxins means the potential to contaminate your food and your indoor air when you cook. Keep your Northridge, California, apartment safe with homemade oven cleaner. Mix 2 cups of hot water, 1 tablespoon natural dish soap and 1 teaspoon of borax in a spray bottle. Spray on the mess, and allow it to soak for 20 minutes. It should easily wipe clean.

4. All-Purpose Cleaner

For something stronger than vinegar and water, gather 2 teaspoons borax, 1 teaspoon washing soda, 2 cups hot water, 4 tablespoons vinegar, ½ teaspoon natural dish soap and ¼ teaspoon tea tree oil with 8 drops each of rosemary oil, tangerine oil and lavender oil. Dissolve the borax and washing soda in the water, strain into a spray bottle and add the remaining ingredients. Add a bit more of hot water and test on the surface you will be cleaning.

Flower Vase

5 Spring Home Decor Trends to Try Out This Season

Flower VaseSpring — it’s the traditional time for cleaning and renewal. It’s also the time for freshening your home and ridding your mind of the dull, gray days of winter. So, are you ready to add a few new touches to your home this spring? Then check out these five on-trend spring decor ideas.

Embellishments are Big

For spring 2018, embellishments, such as fringe and tassels, are big. Consider adding a few pillows with decorative tassels or, maybe, a fringed wall hanging. What’s also popular this year? Macramé plant hangers that end in long tassels.

Green It Up

Echo the beauty of spring’s blooms and new greenery by adding some beautiful plants to your home. Plants are not just pretty, but they also have added health benefits. For example, they can reduce indoor pollutants, and studies have shown that beautiful flowers can also lower your stress levels.

Wabi-sabi

In Japanese, Wabi-sabi is the art of finding beauty even when there is imperfection. In home decor, that means adding natural pieces — made from wood or stone, for example — that are imperfect rather than machine-produced items, which may be sleek and perfect but have no soul.

Minimize

You may not think of decluttering as a decor trend, but the minimalist look is very in for spring. One of the best places to begin minimizing is the bedroom. A clean, uncluttered bedroom is more conducive for sleep. Why? Because a room overflowing with knickknacks and piles of clothing can create visual noise that will play games with your mind. It can be hard to fall asleep, for example, if you’re worried about all that laundry that you should be putting away.

Metallics

Another trend for spring 2018 is metallic touches, especially brass and gold. You don’t have to go crazy with this trend. Instead, consider adding several gold picture frames or a mirror to a room. Also look for items you can place on your tables, such as a hammered brass bowl.

Animal Crackers

Unique Ways to Use Animal Crackers

Animal CrackersDid you know? April 18 is National Animal Crackers Day and we’re ready to enjoy it to the fullest at our lovely Northridge apartments.

Put animal crackers on your shopping list so you’re ready on the perfect day to share them with friends and loved ones. Of course, there is a hashtag to share ideas: #NationalAnimalCrackersDay.

Here are three ways to get in on the animal crackers fun, each one sure to inspire more.

Use Animal Crackers as Cupcake Toppers

Completely revel in your joy about the day with animals garnishing your sweet cupcakes. Animal crackers can garnish the periphery of a pie too, so that each slice has its own animal.

To be a bit subtler, crush them into a pie crust! Instead of the graham cracker staple, try animal crackers in your go-to recipe. These cookies make a delicious pie crust your friends will love.

Create Festive Gifts

Wrap them in small, clear cylinders, bags, or boxes. Tie them smartly with a bow. Then bring them to classes or pass them out at a meeting. Animal crackers are adorable in see-through gift packs.

Make Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Great with apple slices. Bring a tray for your protein-loving hiking buddies. Don’t forget Pinterest to find plenty of festive, cookie-focused yet healthful ideas.

Watching Your Sodium Intake or Prefer Organic?

While they were associated with Barnum and the circus back in the day, animal crackers have come a long way. Organic animal crackers at Trader Joe’s, for example, are low-sodium delights and a great deal. And you know what’s pretty great? They don’t use animal products in their animal crackers. At Candlewood North Apartments, there are many Trader Joe’s conveniently near our community!

When enjoying National Animal Crackers Day at our beautiful Northridge apartments, invite your friends to meet us too. We’d love to have them join you in coming home to Candlewood North Apartments in Northridge, CA. Our apartment community offers studio, one- and two-bedroom floor plans. Our apartments feature spacious closets and kitchens equipped with refrigerator, dishwasher, and disposal. Call our office at (866) 796-2183 to learn more about our available floor plans today!

Washing a Fork

Daily Tasks to Keep Yourself More Organized

Washing a ForkMoving is no small feat, but now that you’ve settled into your new apartment, you couldn’t be happier. The boxes are unpacked and everything has its place.

You want to keep it that way, but you get busy and run out of time to keep the apartment as tidy as you wish. Instead of leaving the gargantuan task of cleaning and reorganizing to the weekends, why not break it down day by day?

If you have at least five to ten minutes, then you can take care of these simple but effective daily organization tasks.

1. Wash the Dishes After You’re Done Using Them

No one really likes doing the dishes. The bigger the pile, though, the longer it takes. That may make you put off the task for as long as possible until the dishes are overflowing. To prevent this, wash your dishes after you’re done using them. That will keep the sink empty and your stress levels under control.

2. Plan Your Outfits in Advance

Nothing to wear? Don’t waste precious time in the morning frantically trying to put an outfit together. Read up on the weather forecast for tomorrow and then plan an outfit tonight. This way, when you wake up in the morning, you have one less thing to do.

3. Prep Your Meals for the Day or Week

Just like the great clothing debate, you can spend hours trying to figure out what to eat for dinner. Instead of ordering takeout again, make a meal plan at the beginning of each week. This way, you know what you’re going to make each evening so there are no unpleasant surprises.

4. Clean Your Wallet/Purse

Your wallet and purse can become a black hole of receipts, chewing gum, papers, wrappers, and other assorted junk. To avoid that, and make the mess more palatable to clean up, empty your wallet/purse daily. Clean it inside and out, discarding junk before it accrues.

Leather Couch

Best and Worst Sofa Fabrics for Pet Hair

Leather CouchAs you’re probably aware, your furry friend can really test a sofa’s upholstery with their sharp claws, dirty paws, hair, and sometimes even, drool. That’s why you need to consider carefully the type of fabric you choose when purchasing a new sofa. Here are two upholstery choices that work well with pets and two that aren’t ideal choices if you have furry friends living in your home.

Leather = Excellent

The best upholstery choice for a sofa, by far, is distressed leather. It is durable and easy to clean. Muddy paw marks and drool, for instance, are easily wiped away. In addition, light scratch marks from a pet’s claws can also be mostly buffed out and will also blend in with the distressed look of the leather. Another reason to choose leather? Pet fur won’t stick to leather like it will on other types of fabrics.

Microfiber = Good

Like leather, this synthetic fabric is easy to clean and is also very durable. A big plus? A cat’s claws are less likely to fray this fabric’s fine synthetic fibers. And while pet hair can collect on microfiber, it is typically easy to remove with a lint roller or with vacuuming.

Tweed = Bad

Because this fabric has a loose weave, it can be susceptible to being snagged by cat and dog claws. In addition, dirt and pet hairs can get caught deep down in the weave, which could eventually cause your sofa to develop that dreaded “doggy” odor. Even worse, tweed attracts pet hair like crazy.

Chenille = Bad

Although chenille is soft and durable, it is not the best fabric for a sofa if you have pets in your home. Chenille has a nubby pile that is made up of little loops. And — as any cat owner knows — little loops don’t do well against sharp cat claws.

Is your current apartment as pet-friendly as the first two couch fabrics? If the answer is no, then please take a look at our pet-friendly apartments in Northridge. You and your furry best friend can enjoy the good life in our community, which also boasts a resort-style pool and an outdoor space with lounge-style seating. Call us to learn more!

Bell Peppers

Healthy and Delicious Dinner Recipes to Try

Bell PeppersCooking in the kitchen of your Northridge apartment is a blast, except when you’re on a diet. It’s never easy to give up high-calorie favorites, but you can reduce the burden with the right recipes that taste delicious.

4 Delicious and Nutritious Dinner Recipes

Pizza Stuffed Peppers

Skip the delivery pizza and whip up this healthy treat instead. Begin by preheating the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Clean and remove the seeds from each bell pepper, one per person. Bake for twenty minutes. Remove from the oven, and add mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and mini pepperoni slices to taste. Return to the oven for another 10-15 minutes.

Turkey Burgers

Substitute red meat with ground turkey for a healthier burger. Aim for at least 90 percent lean — the leaner, the better. Mix one pound of turkey with one teaspoon of black pepper, one teaspoon of onion powder, half a teaspoon of salt, and half a teaspoon of garlic powder. Split this mixture into four equal servings. Cook each patty on a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add lettuce, tomato, and any other desired toppings.

Quinoa Enchilada Casserole

This recipe suits vegetarians in need of extra protein. Cook one cup of quinoa with two cups of water. Combine with a can of mild enchilada sauce, half a cup of black beans, and half a teaspoon of chili powder. Spread the mix into a greased baking dish and top with one cup of your favorite shredded cheese.

Tortilla Soup

This healthy soup delivers several servings of veggies while keeping calorie count to a minimum. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil or canola oil in a skillet before adding one diced onion and one minced clove of garlic. Add this to your slow cooker, along with three cups of chicken or vegetable broth, and two cans of diced fire-roasted tomatoes. Add three cups of shredded chicken and a can of pinto beans. Extra beans or lentils allow for an easy vegetarian substitute. Heat on low for five hours before serving with tortilla chips.

With the right dinner recipe, eating healthy doesn’t have to be a chore. Feel free to experiment and make these recipes your own. Cooking is a treat in our kitchens equipped with refrigerator, dishwasher and disposal. Reach out today to learn more about our floor plans.

Hummus

4 Dip Recipes for Your Next Get-Together

HummusA get-together isn’t about the food you serve but about the company you keep. That being said, good food has a way of bringing that company together in a haze of deliciousness. And one thing that people can’t get enough of is a good dip. So the next time you buy a bag of chips, a loaf of bread, or a tray of veggies, keep these four dip recipes in mind.

Easy Hummus

Instead of picking up a container of hummus, try making your own with this easy recipe. The herbs, tahini, and lemon make for such a dynamic combination that it can be used to complement a number of blander foods. Plus, chickpeas are not only delicious, they’re also extremely good for you. Serve this dip with crispy pita chips, veggies or soft bread.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

For a slightly less healthy option, buffalo chicken dip is one of the most addictive things you can serve at a party! It’s a total crowd-pleaser with its rich flavors and spicy kick. Just remember that it may be difficult to serve anything other than this dip. It tends to monopolize the amount of available real estate in your guests’ stomachs!

Cheese Fondue

Fondue may sound a little kitschy, but it’s timeless. Not only is it fun to get out the skewers and dunk along with your friends in your apartment, it’s also a great way to get more dimension from a dip. There are so many versions of cheese fondue that it’s almost sneaky in terms of the depth of the flavor profile. If you’ve never tried to make it before, it’s probably time to give it a go.

Pepperoni Dip

Want to make your own pizza but don’t quite have the time? Make this dip instead to give people their fix without having to pay a delivery fee. Creamy, rich, and delicious, this dip is basically a deconstructed pizza. Serve it with thick crusty bread for a little twist on the traditional pie.

Cleaning Supplies

5 Places People Forget to Clean in Their Apartment

Cleaning SuppliesDid you know that even if you vacuum and sweep on a regular basis your home might not be as clean as you think? There are areas, which tend to be tiny nooks and crannies, that are often overlooked when you clean. To help you keep your home as clean as possible, we have gathered a list of some of the areas in our apartments in Northridge, California, that people might forget to clean.

#1 – Door Knobs

Chances are good that you come into contact with door knobs multiple times throughout the day, but you probably don’t clean them on a regular basis. Everything from dirt and dust to germs accumulate on door knobs. Keep your apartment clean – and reduce your chances of getting sick – by cleaning and sanitizing all the door knobs in your apartment.

#2 – Dishwashers

Every dishwasher has a tiny little filter at the bottom that catches food. If the filter gets blocked, dishes will not be able to be properly cleaned. Depending on how often you use your dishwasher, this filter should be emptied out every two weeks. For those who don’t use their dishwashers a lot, you may only need to clean the filter every month.

#3 – Under and Along the Sides of the Appliances

Dirt, dust, and even dropped food can accumulate under your refrigerator and along the sides of your stove. Next time you are sweeping the floors, make sure you take a few seconds to clean up around the appliances.

#4 – Tops of Books

The tops of books are magnets for dust. If you have a bookshelf in your apartment, every two or three months take each book off the shelf and dust it.

#5 – Baseboards

Even if you sweep your floors daily, you might not be reaching the baseboards of the walls. Over time, huge piles of dust will accumulate. Keep your apartment clean by gently sweeping the baseboards with a broom next time you are cleaning your floors.

Candlewood North Floor Plan

Tricks to Finding the Best Area Rug

Candlewood North Floor PlanA visually appealing and well-placed area rug can set off a room. But, finding that perfect area rug can be easier said than done. Here are some tricks for selecting an area rug that we hope prove useful for our Candlewood North community members in Northridge, California.

Size Matters

The width of an area rug can have a significant impact on a room’s visual appeal. If the rug seems too small, that can make the room feel less inviting. If the rug takes up too much floor space, that can make the room feel smaller. It’s important to map out the right size for your space. Try laying out paper or tape to the desired size and then take measurements. With that data in hand, you won’t waste time looking at the wrong sized rugs and making unnecessary store exchanges.

Measure a Room by its Parts

One of the tricks to purchasing the right size rug is to not, necessarily, base the size off the room. Sometimes the best approach is to work with the furniture configuration instead. The amount of space outside the area rug may be less important than how well it works with seating.

For instance, laying an area rug under an intimate sofa, chairs and coffee table can create an inviting space that family and guests naturally gravitate toward. That can spark improved social interaction. When thinking along these lines, consider laying an area rug just under the dining room set or only the bed. The space outside of the area rug may enhance a large or cozy room feel. However, making the space feel homey should be job one.

Consider Standard Sizes

When mapping out the desired rug size, it may prove helpful to think in terms of standard rug sizes. Although store inventory can vary by a few inches, working within the framework of these common sizes will allow you greater color and design options. Try mapping out the floor space with these foot-sizes in mind.

  • 3 x 5
  • 4 x 6
  • 5 x 8
  • 7 x 10
  • 8 x 11
  • 9 x 12

Many manufacturers have discontinued the 6 x 9 area rug as a standard size. However, you may still run across the size at outlets.

Color Outside the Lines

When it comes to expressing your individual taste, color outside the lines. Non-standard area rugs, brilliant or deep colors and interior designs that blaze their own trail are just as important as common wisdom. At the end of the day, select an area rug that makes your living space yours.

We hope our residents enjoy these area rug suggestions. If you or a friend would like more information about our Northridge apartments, call us today.

Calendar Book for 2018

How to Stay on Track With Your New Year’s Resolutions

Calendar Book for 2018For just about everyone, setting and accomplishing goals is easier said than done. Now that we’re well into the new year, you should take a few steps to ensure that you continue to stay on track when it comes to your resolutions. Here are a few tips that will help you keep your New Year’s resolutions.

1. Create a Schedule

One way that you can prevent your New Year’s resolutions from going to the wayside is by creating a schedule. Figure out a way to break up your resolutions into small and regular tasks and schedule them on your calendar and digital planner. For example, if your goal is to get into shape, you should schedule to go to the gym for one hour after work every Tuesday and Thursday.

Creating a schedule will help you start small with the goals that you set. Many people set goals that can seem daunting and impossible to achieve. However, if you break up an overarching resolution into smaller goals, you’ll find it easier to achieve the resolution.

2. Track Your Progress

Many people get discouraged if they don’t see much progress after a few weeks of working toward their resolutions. Therefore, you need to have a system in place that will make it easy for you to track your progress in a visible manner. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, you can weigh yourself every two weeks to see how much progress you’ve made. Seeing how far you have come since the new year will make it easier to stay motivated.

3. Make It Fun

Contrary to popular belief, achieving a New Year’s resolution doesn’t have to be boring or difficult. The more fun you inject into the process, the more likely you will achieve your goal. Depending on the goal, you may have to do a lot of experimentation to figure out what works best for you. For example, if your goal is to get into shape, you may prefer playing tennis to doing elliptical workouts day in and day out.

If you want to achieve your New Year’s resolutions, you need to have a system in place to stay on track. Consider reaching out to others in your community to keep each other accountable. For more information about joining our Candlewood Northwood community and our available Northridge apartments, don’t hesitate to contact us.
