Candy Corn

4 Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Candy CornDo you dislike wasting money on a costume that you’ll only wear once? Are you on a budget and don’t want to spend money on an expensive costume? No worries! Here are four ideas for inexpensive, do-it-yourself costumes that are also easy to make.

Snapchat Filter Photo

Get a piece of yellow poster board and cut the Snapchat ghost shape in the middle. The cutout should be large enough to showcase your face. Next, draw random black dots around the ghost to mimic the Snapchat look. Next, pick a filter that you’re fond of and apply your makeup accordingly. For example, if you like the animal filters, make some dog ears and use makeup to turn your nose into a canine’s snout.

Bath Puff

For this costume, you’ll need to purchase colorful tulle (save money by looking first in the remnants section) from a fabric store. Then, bunch it together and sew or pin it to a strapless dress or a tunic-length t-shirt. Add a string to your costume to imitate the one on a bath puff.

Men in Black

If you have a black suit (or know where to borrow one), a black tie, and shades, you’ve got yourself a Men in Black costume. Wear a single earbud and tuck the other end away in your suit. Or if you’d rather be a Blues Brother, top your costume with a fedora, instead.

Purchase a white or clear dome-shaped umbrella for the main body of the jellyfish. For tentacles, add pretty holographic or fabric ribbon with a glue gun to the underside of the umbrella. Strips of bubble wrap can also be used as legs. If you’d prefer, you can also wrap the entire umbrella in a gauzy material and then secure it on the underside with a safety pin. You can then glue or sew on the “legs.” Wear something white or lacy to match the jellyfish vibe.

Autumn Candles

Countdown to Fall: Autumn Touches to Add to Your Decor

Autumn CandlesWith the leaves changing colors and a crisp nip in the air, it’s time to wave goodbye to summer and welcome fall. The change of season is the perfect time to tweak the décor of apartments in Northridge. Even if you don’t want the overly-obvious skeleton and skull take on Halloween decorations, or cartoon turkeys, there are plenty of autumn touches you can add as a subtle nod to the season.

Fall Shades

Even without painting or making large-scale changes, adding fall hues to your décor can make a major impact. Pack away throws and decorative pillows in light or bright shades and bring in ones in rust, dark green, burgundy or brown. Table linens, such as placemats or table runners are also easy places to add a pop of autumn color. In addition to the traditional fall shades, add a few metallic gold items for a rich, warm look.

Cozy Textures

Cool fall temperatures invite snuggles and cuddles. Give your apartment in Northbridge a cozy vibe by adding chunky textures. Toss a nubby knit blanket over the back of the couch or the arm of a chair. Add soft throw pillows to dining room chairs and use burlap in place settings and coasters. Place velvet pillows on couches or armchairs and add an extra rug to hard-surface floors.

Pumpkins With a Twist

Pumpkins are a go-to fall decorating option. If the bright orange look is too cliché, try giving this favorite a DIY makeover. Give fresh or plastic pumpkins a coat of white or ivory spray paint. The unexpected color will blend in with your existing décor while retaining a fall feel.

Swap Flowers for Leaves

There is no more classic sign that fall has arrived than beautifully-colored leaves. Exchange vases of flower for faux stems of red or orange leaves. A few long stems casually arranged in a glass vase is a lovely addition to an entryway or mantle.

Flickering candles add extra warmth to any décor. Pumpkin, apple or cinnamon versions give an instant autumn vibe. For a more subtle and elegant touch, place an unscented pillar candle in a vase of coffee beans. Or, place a collection of pillars of varying heights on a shelf.

Are you in search of a new place to display your fall décor? Call us today to find out how Candlewood North can become your new home this autumn.

Cat and Human

Happy Cat Month! 4 Ways to Celebrate With Your Feline Friend

Cat and HumanCat lovers will be glad to know that September is Happy Cat Month! Its focus is on providing a happy life for your cat, and all it takes to celebrate is to provide some things that are sure to please them. Here are some ideas to consider:

Give Your Cat Some New Toys

Just like humans, cats like to have new things every so often. They get bored with their old toys and playthings, and they’ll appreciate the chance to play with something different. Choose toys of the same general type your cat already likes, but pick ones that have some sort of new twist to them. For example, if your cat likes to play with balls, give them one that holds some cat treats.

Engage in More Active Play With Your Cat

The activity in question will mostly be done by the cat, but it’ll help keep your pet engaged and in shape just the same. If you don’t already do so, use a laser pointer to provide a target for your cat’s stalking and hunting instincts. Vary the pattern of motion you use for the dot to keep it interesting. Just make sure you never shine the laser directly into the cat’s eyes, and the play will be safe and fun.

Bring in a New Scratching Post

This’ll be a sure hit with any cat. They love to scratch, and they also love to scratch new things. As a bonus, it’ll help protect your furniture from scratching damage.

Be Attentive to Your Cat’s Needs for Affection and Solitude

Paying attention to your cat’s moods so that your actions are in tune with it will definitely please your cat. If they want to cuddle, go right ahead and engage. However, if attempts to cuddle are snubbed, leave them alone.

These are just some ways to make sure your cat is joyful during Happy Cat Month and at other times of the year as well. Our final suggestion is to make sure you’re living in a cat-friendly apartment. For a great selection of pet-friendly apartment homes to choose from, just stop by our office and see our apartments in Northridge.

Whole Pie

4 Pie Recipes That Will Make You Excited for Fall

Whole PieFall in Southern California can sometimes feel like summer that’s just mellowed out a little bit. If you’ve been having a hard time getting into the swing of autumn, it’s time to pre-heat the oven, pick some fruit (even if only from a supermarket bin), and bake a pie that will keep you warm when the crisp wind starts to blow.

Harvest Pie

If you can’t decide between a pie made of cherries, apples, and cranberries, why not combine the three into this incredible dish. Honey, almonds, and a buttery crust tie the fruit together into an incredible package you won’t be able to resist serving your friends. Serve with cheddar cheese, ice cream, or whipped cream, and you won’t go wrong.

Apple Butter Pumpkin Pie

Taking two of the most delectable fruits and combining the two together yields a sweet and crunchy midnight treat. The apple butter makes the pie slightly sweeter than a traditional pumpkin, while the streusel on top gives the dish more texture. Showing up to a Thanksgiving party with this concoction will definitely put you in everyone’s good graces.

Toffee Almond Pie

If you’re not the type of person who craves fruit during any season, then try this twist on a traditional pecan pie. The toffee and almond combination is one that will get your lips smacking and taste buds dancing. This pie manages to be both creamy and crunchy while giving you just the right mix of sticky and sweet.

Triple Pear Pie With Walnut Crust

Pear is sometimes overlooked when it comes to pies, but that just gives you even more of a reason to give it a try for this season. Use pear nectar to balance out the tartness of Bosc slices, and walnut to complement the cardamom used in this recipe.

Our apartments in Northridge will always smell better when there’s the scent of a freshly-baked pie cooling off on the counter. For autumn, choose seasonal ingredients that remind you of all the fun parts of fall. From Halloween to Thanksgiving, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. If you’re looking for a better place to bake, call Candlewood North for more information on our available floor plans.

Dog Days of Summer Safety Tips for Valley Living

Sun and GrassSummer in the San Fernando Valley is finally in full swing and that means that temperatures are rising. With the summer weather bringing extreme heat to the Northridge area, we believe that it’s important for all of our residents to be aware of the dangers that high temps can pose for your health. Whether you only venture outside to run into your air conditioned car or you’re a fan of long summer hikes, be sure to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, cool and happy all summer long by following a few helpful summer safety tips.

Top 5 Summer Safety Tips for to Avoid Overheating

1. Stay Aware

Pay attention to the hottest parts of the day by checking the weather regularly. Modify your activities as needed to avoid spending too much time outdoors without protection from the sun. It’s also important to pay close attention to your hydration status and drink plenty of water during a heatwave.

2. Keep Cool

When you spend time outdoors in extreme heat, you’ll need to do your best to stay in relatively cool areas. Remember that you can always take cover under a tree and use an umbrella when picnicking or out at the beach.

3. Dress Accordingly

Loose-fitting, light-colored and lightweight clothing is best for naturally regulating your body temperature during the hot summer months. Additionally, natural fabrics like cotton allow your skin to breathe and your body to cool much better than synthetic or heavy materials.

4. Limit Time in the Car

During a heatwave, it’s best to avoid hot enclosed spaces whenever possible. As the temps outside rise, so will the temperature in your car. Remember to never leave children or pets in an unattended car during the summer months.

5. Prevent Sunburn

Don’t go outside without putting on your sunscreen. Most doctors recommend wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your delicate skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
