Children can lose up to two months of reading and math skills during the summer, according to the National Summer Learning Association. Fortunately, parents can prevent learning loss with carefully planned activities. Community residents also can band together to create summer learning experiences.
Encourage Reading and Writing
One way to prevent loss of verbal skills is to keep your kids reading and writing. Public libraries often have summer reading programs that provide prizes. Find reading materials that speak to your child's passion and don't be overly concerned about the medium. Joke books, comic books, sports statistics, menus, game instructions, magazines and even song lyrics all help to keep these skills sharp, according to Parents magazine.
If traveling, encourage your kids to send postcards to friends and relatives. Buy an attractive notebook to encourage them to keep a summer journal or trip journal, according to TeachHub.
Activities
Everyday Learning
Many activities that families typically do together during the summertime can easily be turned into learning opportunities. For example, after a movie, discuss its themes; such as kindness, respect, and dignity. Talk through choices the characters made and how they led to the outcome. Expand family vacation trips to include interactive learning opportunities such as war re-enactments, battlefields, factory tours, and ethnic festivals, says Parents magazine. Instead of playing only the board games you have, encourage your children to invent their own around something they are passionate about, including researching the topic and writing their own rules.
Strategic Experiences
To help children use their skills, parents can strategically plan new activities. One example is geocaching, which improves math, science and social studies skills, according to TeachHub. In geocaching, participants hide weatherproof containers in public places and post clues online. Finding the containers requires the use of GPS or another navigational device. Another idea is to buy a bird feeder and a field guide and try to identify as many different types of birds as possible.
Involve the Community

Granted, we need to be mindful and protect our cars from the damaging effects of those glorious rays. Inside a car, air temperatures rise to well above 145 degrees. When exposed to direct sunshine, the dash and seats can easily approach 200 degrees.
The outer surface of a car can get very hot as well. An engine is less efficient under the sun's heat. Additionally, the paint finish can start to show wear more quickly when a car is always parked in the sun.
Are You Taking These Four Precautions to Keep Your Car Safe From Sun Damage?
- Use sun protection visors inside your car windows. Getting in this habit keeps your car cooler while protecting it against damaging rays. Once you start using these shields, you'll find they're a cinch to open and put into place on your dash.
- Wipe your dash and seats regularly. Sunlight combined with dust can gradually erode the finish of your car's interior surfaces. If you wipe interior surfaces with a damp cloth on a regular basis, you'll clean off grime and particles that can hasten wear and tear.
- Consider the benefit of seat covers. Covers protect all seats, no matter the material. Even inexpensive, fold-up covers can help a great deal. Plus, they keep your body and your clothes fresh while you drive.
- Park in a shady spot. Avoid direct sunlight when parking to protect your car. Consider opening your windows a crack, too, to allow fresh air into the vehicle and avoid a buildup of interior air pressure.

YOGA POSES NEAR OUR NORTHRIDGE APARTMENTS
Nothing beats stress faster than moving into your favorite yoga poses and holding them for a fifteen count or more. You can attend yoga classes near our Northridge apartments at Athleta at The Village at Topanga. On Saturday, November 4 try Yoga Fusion Flow with Deanne! In this class, Deanne will flow a fusion of all methods of yoga practices. This movement and flow will create balance between the body, mind and spirit. All levels of ability and experience are welcome to this class but remember to bring a yoga mat.
If you’re looking for more of a serene yoga flow, mark your calendar for Sunday, November 5 for Peaceful Yoga Flow with Ananda. Amber from Ananda Yoga will be guiding the class through a peaceful and restorative yoga flow. For this class, remember to bring your own mat and come 5 minutes early so the class can begin altogether.
RELAXATION STATION
Join Kandice from Ananda Yoga on Sunday, November 12 as she leads a meditation class focused on breath work and journaling. Skin Laundry will also be providing complimentary treatments for this event that will deep clean your skin and improve it over time.
FLIGHT CLASS

Mercedes-Benz is doing more than serving the people of San Fernando Valley — they want to help our four-legged friends too. They’re out to help lost pups find a forever home. This event is hosted by a rescue organization called Delaney’s Dog and sponsored by the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Calabasas.
EVENT DETAILS
The event takes place on November 5 and will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Mercedes-Benz of Calabasas is conveniently located on 24181 Calabasas Road, right off the freeway). This is the second annual event, and it promises to be full of fun and friends. You’ll have a chance to meet your perfect new companion as you check out all the dogs they have available for adoption. This is the time to find a new pet for your family! If you or your new best pal get a little hungry while you’re there, you can sample some treats from SusieCakes, Healthy Spot, and Four Sigmatic. Come be a hero to a dog in need when you stop by!
ABOUT DELANEY’S DOGS
Delaney’s Dog is run entirely by volunteers and is committed to helping canines of every breed find the best spot for them. They only take in rescues who are in danger of being given to the city or county shelters, or of being turned out on the street. Delaney’s Dog is a certified non-profit organization serving the greater Los Angeles area, and they do more than just find homes for dogs. All animals are spayed or neutered and have received proper veterinary treatment. They’ve also been micro-chipped and placed in loving foster care environments for more successful rehabilitation. One of the major benefits of living in our Northridge apartments is that you’re close to everything. With the holidays just around the corner, your thoughts may turn to helping the less fortunate — and you’ve got a great opportunity to do so with the Los Angeles Mission.
FROM YOUR APARTMENTS IN NORTHRIDGE TO HELPING A VITAL LOCAL MISSION
With the central location of your apartments in Northridge, you’re in the ideal position to help out at the Los Angeles Mission this Thanksgiving. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Mission, and they provide hope and help to thousands every year.
The Thanksgiving volunteer sign-up starts with completing this form on their website. By filling out that form, you’ll be registered for the upcoming volunteer orientation on Saturday, November 4. The orientation lasts from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the orientation includes a tour of the Los Angeles Mission. When attending the orientation, come to 316 East Winston Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013. Be aware that the parking is quite limited so you may need to use metered parking if the lot’s full when you arrive.
PREPARING TO VOLUNTEER AT THE LOS ANGELES MISSION
As you prepare to volunteer at the Los Angeles Mission this Thanksgiving, there are several things to be aware of. First, you can register for future street events once you’ve attended orientation. Be sure to read the volunteer policy and procedure information prior to your orientation day. It’s also helpful if you have the Volunteer Photo and Liability Release form complete and ready to deliver on the day of your orientation.
Be aware that when you complete your registration for orientation, you won’t get a confirmation via email. Once your form is submitted, you’re all set. Be sure to show between 8:45 a.m. and 9 a.m. After that time, the chapel doors are closed and no other entrants are permitted.

With fall in full swing and Halloween coming up, this is the perfect time to visit a local pumpkin patch and select a pumpkin or two. Whether you plan on carving jack-o’-lanterns or painting your pumpkins, these are a few of the top pumpkin patches that are near Northridge.
FORNERIS FARMS
Forneris Farms in Mission Hills is a quick 15-minute or so drive away from Northridge, which makes it a convenient place to go to for pumpkins. From September 30 through October 31, the farm has a pumpkin patch available where you can choose a fresh pumpkin for your home. During this time, the farm also has a Harvest Festival going on with a corn maze, tractor-pulled train rides and other attractions. While you’re there, you can also stock up on locally grown produce, including apples, green beans and peppers.
BOBBY THE SNOWMAN’S CHRISTMAS TREES AND PUMPKIN PATCH
Bobby the Snowman’s Christmas Trees and Pumpkin Patch is less than a half an hour south of Northridge in Woodland Hills. This family-owned and operated pumpkin patch is a local favorite for its great selection of pumpkins. You’ll also have a fun time wandering through the pumpkin patch looking for the perfect pumpkin while surrounded by spooky Halloween decorations. Bobby the Snowman’s Christmas Trees and Pumpkin Patch has pumpkins in all sizes so you can find the ideal one for a large jack-o’-lantern or a smaller one to decorate with paint and other craft items.
TINA’S PUMPKIN PATCH
Tina’s Pumpkin Patch is also less than a half an hour south of Northridge in Sherman Oaks. At this pumpkin patch, you can stop by any time in October to choose your pumpkins. There’s no charge to visit the pumpkin patch during October, and you’ll find some fun activities available, including a straw maze and kid-friendly train ride. Tina’s Pumpkin Patch has an impressive selection of locally grown pumpkins to choose from so it might take awhile to find the right one. While adults are looking for pumpkins, kids can enjoy pony rides and a petting zoo, as well as giant inflatables and a slide.

Good music comes in many forms, and the residents of our community are lucky enough to catch plenty of tunes that are played in the park near our Northridge apartments. Thanks to Music in the Park, Rancho Simi Community Park takes on new life in the summer months, offering an awesome lineup of tribute bands.
If you’re looking for an event that will transform your Saturday evening into a legendary experience, make sure you check out Mirage — Visions of Fleetwood Mac.
Here’s what you need to know:
THE BAND
Mirage is an L.A. based band that celebrates the unforgettable sounds of Stevie Nicks and the Fleetwood Mac crew. These artists present a classic lineup of songs that are meant to last through the ages. Singer Michelle Tyler is even rumored to have been praised by Stevie Nicks herself after Nicks heard a live performance by Tyler.
Focused on providing an authentic experience reminiscent of one of the most renowned bands all over the world, Mirage features three vocalists, a bass player, and a drummer. Rest assured, you’ll get the full Fleetwood Mac experience when Mirage comes to Music in the Park!
THE DETAILS
Catch Mirage at Rancho Simi Community Park on Saturday, August 19. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m., but you’ll want to arrive early to ensure you get a great spot.
Music in the Park is free of charge. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic basket and gather your friends and loved ones for a great evening outdoors. Foor vendors will also be available, offering up tasty treats and bites to eat. Wondering what a good Stevie Nicks tribute show would be without a great brew or relaxing glass of wine? Your standard Wednesday in August is about to get a lot more exciting. On August 16, you can catch a live taping of the hit series “Bring It!” brought to you by Lifetime. The series showcases Miss D and her Dancing Dolls, a group of hip-hop majorettes who compete with the best of the best across the country. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the show or have only caught an episode here or there, you’re not going to want to miss this event.
TOURING THE NATION
This is not the first tour the network has done to promote the show, but even the most optimistic decision maker might have been surprised by the public’s response. Lifetime was inundated by requests to bring back the tour for this year. People all over the country were delighted with the infectious energy the majorettes had on the stage. The majorettes put their whole heart into bringing out the natural talent of each individual in their group, while still being able to work as a team. Their incredible formations and ingenious creativity shines through with every move. If you missed the summer tour of Bring It! from last year, then now’s your chance to get in on the action.
THE DETAILS
You can catch this show at the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live on August 16 at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). For an even better view of the all new performances for this year, opt for the VIP experience. Sit in the front orchestra section, park in the closest lot to the Theater, and get in through the back door before everyone else. You’ll also get food and drinks in the VIP lounge for 2 hours before the show, as well as other perks during the show. For those who don’t live anywhere near Los Angeles, they may wonder why anyone feels the need to get away. But for those who understand the traffic, the heat, and the crowds, it’s nice to get away for a little while. See where you can go for a quick day or weekend trip when you just have to see someplace new.
OCEANSIDE
Oceanside is around two to three hours away, and it’s a lovely place to go when you can’t be in a big city any longer. While Oceanside is no longer the extremely sleepy town-by-the-sea it once was, it’s definitely not going to be as busy as San Diego or San Francisco. Plus, there’s plenty to see, do, and eat.
SAN LUIS OBISPO
This little college town may seem boring, but you really just have to scratch a bit beneath the surface. In around 3.5 hours, you can be exploring its many shops, restaurants, and cafes. The people who live up there are extremely friendly, and they’re more than happy to give you advice about the nuances of what to do when you’re there. Stop by nearby Morro Bay for an incredible view of the water (and sunset).
LAGUNA BEACH
In Orange County, you’ll find Laguna Beach just waiting to transport you into the world of opulence — at least at first glance, anyway. While much of this city seems geared towards exquisiteness, there are affordable places to go to if you know where to look. Known for its galleries, eclectic food choices, and stunning coastline, this little town has it all.
OXNARD
Oxnard is definitely the closest attraction on this list at about an hour or so away, but it’s often overlooked because it doesn’t have a lot of the traditional amenities that nearby Santa Barbara has. But when the summer sun and tourists start rolling in, this seaside neighborhood will definitely help you decompress when you’re feeling stressed and need to get away.
