While most people think that the spring season is the ideal time for decluttering, the shift from summer to fall and on into winter is also a great time to make space in your apartment. Whether you’re looking to downsize your closets, or you simply feel like a good refresh before the holidays are in full swing, this is a great time to declutter your apartment in Northridge. Keep reading to check out a few of our top fall decluttering tips.

Practical Fall Decluttering Tips

  1. Donate Unloved Clothing

Can you go through your closet and pull out multiple pieces that didn’t get any love this summer? If so, it may be time to donate them to someone that can get better use out of them. You can give them to a friend or family member, or simply gather them up along with other items in your home for a charity shop donation. Either way, you’ll make room in your closet for your fall/winter wardrobe and help someone who’ll likely get more use out of your unloved items.

  2. Clear Out Houseplants

You were probably busy this summer enjoying the beautiful weather and hanging with friends. So, it’s no wonder that a few of your houseplants didn’t fair through the season very well. If any of them are too far gone, now is the ideal time to lay them to rest and clear space for your more festive fall decor.

  3. Recycle

Are you of those people who like to hang onto Amazon boxes and magazines “just in case” you can use them later? If these kinds of items are taking up space in your apartment, it’s time to declutter and send them to be recycled. Even if your cat loves to play in your old boxes, it’s time to say your goodbyes and maybe make some room for a new cat perch instead!

Residents who keep their apartments in Northwood clean on a regular basis are also keeping their families healthy. To maintain an even more sustainable lifestyle, it's a great idea to keep your cleaning tools sanitized. This helps to make your cleaning tools last longer, which means you won't need to replace them as often. Here are some tips on keeping household cleaning tools sanitary.

1. Mop Maintenance

The mop head tends to be one of the grungiest cleaning tools in Northwood apartments because it's used to scrub kitchen and bathroom floors. Mop heads should be cleaned about three times a year (once every four months). For microfiber mop heads, you can wash them as a laundry item on the hottest setting. For sponge mops, soak the sponge in a bucket of hot water and vinegar for half an hour. Allow the mop head to air-dry outside.

2. Toilet Brush Cleaning

To sanitize your toilet brush, soak the bristles in a bowl or bucket with two cups of bleach. Let the bristles soak for about an hour.

3. Vacuum Cleaner Wipe Down

Have you ever cleaned your vacuum cleaner? It builds up a lot of dust, hair, and debris if you don't. Unplug the vacuum before cleaning it. For bagless vacuums, take them apart and wipe everything down a damp sanitary cloth. Allow the parts to fully dry before reassembling. If your vacuum cleaner uses a bag, dump the entire bag and wipe down the inside with a dry cloth. A damp cloth can be used to wipe accessories and the exterior parts.

4. Broom Clean Up

Cleaning your broom is a two-step process. First, vacuum the bristles with a round brush attachment. Then, soak the bristles in warm dishwater for about 30 minutes. Stand the broom upside down in a corner to allow it to air-dry.

Those tips will extend the lives of most of your cleaning tools, which will save you money and helps to keep your Northwood apartment nice and clean. Know anyone who plans to move soon? Let them know we still have floor plans available, which they can view by calling the leasing office at 866-796-2183.

Recent advances in technology have opened the doors for everyone to live in a futuristic space. All it takes is just a few smart gadgets and your Northridge apartments will be transformed. And although it seems frivolous from here, once you have everything set up, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. So, take a look at these three high-tech systems and start dreaming about upgrading your living space.

Digital Personal Assistant

Digital personal assistants are all the rage and for good reason. They provide you with endless support and entertainment, no matter where you go in your home. You can simply call out a question or command and receive a prompt response in return. This device allows you to do everything from playing your favorite podcasts to looking up recipes using voice commands.

Automatic Lighting System

If you would like to change the ambiance in your apartments in an instant, you can do so with an automatic lighting system. This innovative system hooks up to your phone to allow you to control the lights with the tap of a button. With the right bulbs, you can change the color of the lighting in the room, adjust the brightness, and much more. You can even take control while you are away from home, helping keep things secure while you are out.

Robotic Cleaning Team

Robots are taking over but in a good way. They are taking on cleaning tasks we would rather not do, leaving more time for fun. You can bring in your own robotic cleaning team to handle the upkeep of all your floors. Modern devices can vacuum up the dirt and even mop wood, laminate, and vinyl floors without assistance. So, treat yourself to these devices and never wash another floor again.

With your apartment all jazzed up with high-tech gear, you can live in the futuristic wonderland of your dreams. You can also accomplish the goal of improving your living space by upgrading to one of our incredible apartments in Northridge, California. Give us a call at 866-796-2183 to learn more about our available apartment homes.

sink nozzle Your bathroom isn't just the place where you brush your teeth and take a shower. It can be the spot in your apartment where you go to get away from it all. And it's not just luxurious bubble baths that can make you feel like a million dollars once you're done. Here are a few ways for you to turn your bathroom into a sanctuary.

1. Start Buying

Spending money may not seem like the best way to relax but think of it as a long-term investment that will undoubtedly pay some much larger dividends down the line. Buy brand-new fancy towels that are only for bath time and only meant for you. These thick, lush, clean towels can give you an instant boost of relaxation. Splurge on bath products that give you the shivers when you try them in the store.

2. Light It Up

Once you have everything in place, it's time to light some candles for your next mini-spa session. If you don't want any scents interfering with those of your luxury products, there are plenty of unscented candles to choose from. Tea lights are so affordable and plentiful that they can instantly give the room a glow that can transport you into the moment and away from the stress.

3. Go the Extra Mile

It's not just romantic to throw rose petals into your bath, it's actually good for your skin. Rose water is a type of natural astringent that can shrink up your pores. So before you dismiss this rom-com cliche, try thinking of it a different way. Finally, a facial mask can also be a smart new ritual to try over the summer. The summer sun and harsh air conditioning are not always kind to your skin, and this can be a great way to relieve your skin from stress. These little things can send big messages to your brain about your self-worth.

Every space in Northridge apartments is what you make of it. If you want an apartment that will match your high expectations, call Candlewood North today to learn more about our facilities. From the kitchen to the bathroom to the bedroom, we create a layout that can help you have a more relaxing day.

“The early bird gets the worm.”

While you may not be interested in worms, per se, you still may be interested in the many benefits that rising early can provide. In fact, studies show that those who wake up earlier are overall more successful in their lives.

Still, deciding to start waking up earlier is a big choice — and it’s not easy! If you’re used to sleeping in or rolling out of bed after hitting snooze five or six times, you may want a little help making this transition.

Start Going To Bed Earlier

This doesn’t even mean you need to close your eyes earlier. You just need to start getting ready for bed earlier. This helps your body and mind wind down, better preparing you for a sounder sleep, which will, in turn, help you rise earlier.

Give Yourself Time To Do Nothing In The Morning

A lot of people plan their waking time so that they have just enough time to jump in the shower, get dressed, grab a thermos of coffee, and run out the door. No wonder you don’t want to get up early!

If this is the case for you, change things up. Plan your waking time so that you have at least 20 minutes to shuffle to the kitchen, enjoy a slow cup of coffee and breakfast, and sit on the couch doing nothing. Knowing that you don’t have to wake up and immediately hurry will help you get out of bed more readily.

Don’t Start Slow; Just Jump In

If you’ve tried waking up earlier in the past by adjusting your alarm just 5 or 10 minutes in small increments, forget it. You’ll resort to old habits.

Instead, jump right in. Set your alarm for exactly the time you want to get up, try your best to go to sleep earlier the night before, and force yourself to wake up when your alarm goes off.

The goal here is to force yourself to wake up, struggle through the morning, and go about your day — no matter how tired you are. If you do this, you’ll be exhausted at night and able to go to bed early, giving you enough sleep to get up at the same time the next day.

Consider waking up in your very own brand-new apartment! We have Northridge apartments available. See which floor plans suit your need by giving our office a call today!

A clogged drain in the shower is a common concern that may arise for residents of Northridge apartments. The clog forms from soap residue and hair that gets stuck in the drain and builds up over time. By taking measures to remove the clog with environmentally friendly options, you will be able to clear out the pipes and prevent future clogs.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

An environmentally friendly option to clear a clog in your shower is through baking soda and vinegar. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain of your shower. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the drain and then cover the drain. Make sure the entire drain is covered up.

The reaction between baking soda and vinegar will break down the soap residue and the hair that causes the clog. Allow the mixture to sit for ten minutes, and then pour boiling water into your shower. The boiling water stops the reaction and helps get everything moving down the drain.

Baking Soda and Salt

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of using baking soda and vinegar in your shower, then you can opt for an alternative using baking soda and salt. Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of salt. Pour the entire mixture down the drain.

Allow the salt and baking soda mixture to sit for a half hour or as long as you prefer. Keep in mind that you want to let it sit for longer when you have a stubborn or severe clog in your shower. Pour boiling water into your drain. The boiling water stops any interactions with materials in the clog and pushes everything down the drain. You can keep this mixture in your drain overnight without worrying about damage to your pipes. It is safe and environmentally friendly.

Traditional Plunger

A plunger is a traditional method of removing a minor clog from your pipes. If your shower is draining slower than usual, then get a plunger, add some water to your shower, and place the plunger firmly over your drain. Make sure it seals properly and covers the entire drain. Push down firmly and repeat the process. The pressure from the plunger forces the warm water in your shower down into the drain at a fast pace. That forces the clog to move down the drain and knocks it loose from the pipes.

Removing clogs from your shower does not mean you must use harmful chemicals. You can opt for environmentally friendly alternatives that clear your shower's pipes without the risks. To learn more about clearing pipes in apartments in Northridge, CA or to see available rentals, contact us today.

Getting the most out of closet spaces in Northridge apartments is easier than you might think. With just a few small changes, your closets can feel like walk-ins even if they aren’t. Here are some tips to maximize these spaces.

Get Rid of Clothes You Don’t Want or Need

Why cramp closet space with clothes that are outdated or those that don’t fit properly, just hoping they come back in style or your body changes so you can wear them again. Getting rid of this clutter is as easy as making a donation or using a local free-cycle service you find online.

Take Advantage of Floor Space

It’s simple to invest in some rolling drawers that will situate nicely beneath your hanging clothes in the closet, and you can also use floor space to stack shoe boxes that keep your goodies organized. Corners are excellent spots to include such drawers or non-built in shelves that you can take with you when you move.

Use Upper Closet Shelves

The upper shelf in a closet creates a host of storage opportunities, but these must be taken advantage of wisely. Avoid using these spaces for blankets and sheets, and instead, consider organizers or boxes that allow you to store items you don’t use very often or only utilize for seasonal needs.

Utilize Hooks or Multiple Hanger Designs

Most closets can hold hangers and hooks that allow residents to hang multiple items in one place to conserve space. Some will flip down that are ideal for pants, ties and jeans, while hooks make great places to store jackets, hoodies and other hangable items you want to keep handy. These easily reduce space taken up by multiple hangers.

Add Lighting or Mirrors

Adding one or two touch lights that require no wiring or permanent placement in the closet can be very useful. Simply touch and light up the space, which can easily help you get more organized quickly. Furthermore, adding a hanging mirror that anchors atop your closet door can give you a full view of yourself as you dress and also create the illusion of having a larger space.

It’s natural that you’d want to keep the kitchen in your Northridge apartments sparkling clean. You probably take special care to clean the countertops, the refrigerator, oven and range. But did you know that your automatic dishwasher also needs to be cleaned? Yes, even though the dishwasher is always cleaning your dishes, it too needs to be sterilized and cleaned every now and then. So now that spring cleaning fever has struck, here’s how to deep clean your automatic dishwasher.

Run a Cycle

If you have dirty dishes in the dishwasher, go ahead and run that cycle. This will ensure that you’re starting with as clean a dishwasher as possible.

Remove Everything

Next, take all the racks out of the dishwasher, including the silverware rack. If you aren’t sure how to remove a rack, refer to the owner’s manual.

Examine the Drain

Wearing kitchen gloves, examine the drain area. Remove any food debris that may have become lodged there. Chunks of food debris can clog the drain. Be careful, because there could also be small bits of broken glass, pieces of gravel or shards from bones or shells.

Wipe Down the Sides

Next, use a clean kitchen sponge or cloth to wipe down the sides, top and bottom of the inside of the dishwasher. You can do this with just warm water. Again, this is to remove any small pieces of dried food debris that may be clinging to the walls of the automatic dishwasher.

Run a Cycle With Vinegar

Put the top rack back in. Fill a small bowl with ordinary white household vinegar. Place the bowl in the top rack and run a cycle. The vinegar will sanitize the dishwasher.

Run a Cycle With Baking Soda

Finally, when the vinegar cycle is done, you’ll want to run a cycle with baking soda. Just fill the soap dispenser with baking soda and run the machine. The baking soda will deodorize the dishwasher, getting rid of any residual vinegar odor. You can now replace all the racks in the dishwasher.

That’s it! Now your automatic dishwasher is spic and span and ready to be used over and over again! For more information about available apartments in Northridge, please contact us today!

The residents of our Northridge, CA apartments often have visitors. As anyone who's ever traveled knows, it's easy to forget everyday essentials, but hosts don't always know what kind of things their guests will need to feel comfortable. With this mind, we've come up with a few elements that should be included in everyone's overnight welcome basket.

Toothpaste and Toothbrushes

Nobody wants to discover they neglected to bring one of the most important elements of good hygiene as they're settling in for a good night's sleep. Avoid a last-minute run to the convenience store by having toothpaste and toothbrushes ready, just in case they didn't make it into your guests' overnight bags.

Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash

Traveling with liquids is difficult for so many reasons. If they're carried onto a plane, they have to come in such miniature versions that they won't last more than a few days. If they're stowed inside luggage, there's a high likelihood they'll leak goo all over the place.

Remove the stress of either situation by supplying your visitors with the liquid shower stuff they'll need to feel clean.

A Shower Loofah

Shower loofahs are seldom remembered when packing happens because people need to prepare ahead of time or suffer the wrath of a wet shower sponge inside their suitcases.

Keep a few loofahs in stock so you can toss one in the basket when you know you'll have an overnight guest.

Clean Towels and Washcloths

While you might not have any problem with your guests helping themselves to your space, they might feel uncomfortable rummaging through your belongings in search of clean towels and washcloths. Put these items front and center in your guests' welcome baskets so they can easily grab them when they're ready to hop in the shower.

Snacks

Shelf-safe snacks are great for midnight cravings that might occur. It's a nice touch to offer a few items people can munch on when they're decompressing during their visit. Chips, peanuts, candy and granola bars are great options for shelf-stable foods that can satisfy unexpected hunger pangs.

Our Candlewood North community is filled with beautiful living spaces that'll welcome your guests with open arms. Take a look at our available floor plans today!

There are a lot of resolutions that you can make over the new year, but unfortunately, it's not always easy to stick with them. Bogging yourself down with too many expectations may even force you to give up long before you even get started. To avoid this burnout, you might want to try making smarter solutions without the year-long deadline. Here are a few monthly suggestions that may make more sense than your vague plans to lead a better life.

Add to Your Diet

Instead of denying yourself that extra piece of cake or bag of potato chips that's calling your name, try making a promise to yourself that you'll add something good to your diet this month. Whether it's more veggies, whole grains or Vitamin A, commit to one component for one month and track your progress. This won't stop you from eating those extra calories, but it may increase your awareness of what you're putting in your mouth.

Get More Steps

You don't have to go for the full 10,000 steps a day, but you can commit to an extra 500 steps a day for a whole month (compared to what you usually average). This resolution is a smart move because walking does more than just burn calories. It's also a great way to relieve depression, anxiety or even the temporary blues. Walking around in the winter isn't always easy because of the darker days, but you probably have a lunch hour that could use some more activity.

Stop the Snooze Button

You know that groggy feeling you have when you get to work in the morning? The snooze button is a major enemy of your general productivity, so stop hitting it. For one month, commit to rising above it by rising out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off. This resolution can get your head in the right space before you go to work, so you can get that promotion you want.

These resolutions are all concrete variations on general resolutions you've probably already made for the new year. If you're looking for Northridge apartments that can help you reach your goals, call Candlewood North to learn more about how our apartments can help you lead your best life!
